Roaming in the streets, on beaches, through garbage dumps. Everywhere. Hungry, ill, abused.
The beauty of this paradise Island and the gentleness of its climate is a painful contrast to the harsh life these animals must endure. The tropical weather aids in the rapid spread of infections and diseases amongst animals. Ehrlichiosis (a life endangering illness produced by ticks) affects most of Margarita's stray dogs. Furthermore, most of them are affected by mange, heartworm, fungus and other parasites.
Health officials claim that they don't have the financial means for humane methods of animal control. Periodic mass poisoning of beach dogs is the local response to animal over-population. Long agony with convulsions, vomiting of fluids and blood, unbearable suffering.
In spite of the high death rate of homeless animals, their population is ever increasing. Public concern for the fate of these animals is virtually non- existent.
Ill, "ugly-looking" family pets are often kicked out of their homes, thus constantly increasing the population of homeless animals.
Margarita Island has approximately 30.000 strays or "family dogs" who live on the streets.
AAMOR has rescued over 2,500 strays. But thousands are still waiting for help...
